The North Novie of the Week is Pte. Harris O’Brien Sr. of River Hebert, NS. Pte. O’Brien was an original North Nova Scotia Highlander who went overseas in 1941. He became a dispatch rider (military messenger), a very dangerous occupation to have. Pte. O’Brien carried confidential information through England and France on his motorcycle.

Unfortunately, Pte. O’Brien suffered a crash on his motor bike one night and his body was thrown out into a field alongside a fellow soldier. He laid there bleeding out for hours but was eventually rescued and brought to an English hospital, where he miraculously pulled through. Pte O’Brien returned home to his children, Inez, Harris Jr., George, Doris, Anne, Mary, and Joyce.

We will remember him
