Cpl. Gouchie was born in Nappan, Nova Scotia. He trained in Amherst, NS before heading overseas during WW2 as an original North Nova Scotia Highlander. Cpl. Gouchie was a Rifleman for 'D' Company, and was a D-Day veteran.

The Originals
This is the list of the Original North Nova Scotia Highlanders who departed Halifax for England on 18 July 1941 aboard the S.S. "Orion". Being an "Original" was a status symbol among the members of the North Novas.
Sgt. Lloyd G. Hurley
"Sgt. Lloyd G. Hurley of Maccan, son of Mrs. Amanda Hurley of that place, is one of the five men from Military District No. 6 to be decorated by the French Government in "recognition of gallant and distinguished service in the cause of the Allies."

After seeing the first light of day in Eureka, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, on 2 May 17, RSM MacNeil soon made himself known in the neighbourhood.
NSH Regimental Colours & Music
The Regimental Colour is made of blue silk, with a fringe and gilt silk. A crimson circle is the centre bears the name of the Regiment on the outside in gold lettering.
